I setup alias both sql server 2005 and 2005 to communication cross wide area networks. I cannot use ping and telnet command to validate the network layer connection.
The only tool that I can use is netstat -an.
Questions.
When I netstat in sql 200 server. Should I see the ip address of sql server 2005 show up like 55.121.161.32: 1433?
So far I saw different pot show up like 55.121.161.32. 4344.
I am newbee dba and the network guy keeps telling me that I should use telnet.
Please advise. Thank you.

If this is a named instance, then the instance could be using a dynamic port number. If you have to access the instance through a firewall, then you will need to set a static port for each instance.

Unfortunelly, I can not access to firewall.
I already print out the netstat ip address and show it to him that
the port 1433 is blocked.
