Hi. I have noted in my agent log the following error:
SQL Agent
Message
[364] The Messenger service has not been started - NetSend notifications will not be sent
Indeed the messenger service on the SQL server is disabled (I did not do this so it must be default config).
Can anyone advise what SQL might be trying to send via messenger and whether I should start the messenger service?
Many Thanks,
Phil.

A neutron walks into a bar. "I'd like a beer" he says. The bartender promptly serves up a beer. "How much will that be?" asks the neutron. "For you?" replies the bartender, "no charge."
Two hydrogen atoms walk into a bar. One says, 'I think I've lost an electron.' The other says 'Are you sure?' The first says, 'Yes, I'm positive... '

Hi,
I'm not sure if it's the default setting, but in my organisation the messenger service is always disabled as ICT view it as a security risk. If the Agent's trying to send, it sounds like you may have jobs configured for netsend notification, if so, they will fail to notify because of this.

OK just checked. All my jobs are configured to email notification (on failure) + write to windows application log (on failure), no jobs are configured with 'Net Send'?
Many Thanks,
Phil.

Phil,
if your jobs and alerts are not using NetSend, then you can either ignore this message or try to trace Event Viewer (Event log) for accompanied error messages.
There is a minor possibility that one of your stored procedures using it as well...

Thanks Glen.
