SQL Agent Alert

  • Hello-

I was reviewing my error logs and found that I had two occurrences of tempdb log being full.

The default alert for Full tempdb is configured to e-mail myself and others, but it failed to do so.

Looking at the properties, I can see that it is enabled.  Last Occurred states "Never Occurred" and the Count is 0.

I am not sure what else to look at to determine why it failed to raise the alert properly.

    Regards,

    Scott

  • You said that the log was full, but the alert was for the DB being full

  • did you stop and restart sqlagent after you implemented the first alert ?

You have to when you implement your first active alert.

  • The alert wasn't recently enabled, it's been configured for months and has been restarted many times.

I have seen you post that message before and it is a good thing to keep in mind when adding a new alert.  But I don't think it explains what happened.

    Thanks,

    Scott

  • Quite possibly the alert did not fire because many things use tempdb. If tempdb or it's log is full seemingly innocuous code like sp_who, select statements and many other things will not work. Just musing here ...

  • Hadn't thought about that, but it makes sense.

  • did your temdb-file(s) autogrow ?

If this autogrow takes more time and the query times-out, you also get the message db-full , but the grow completes later on.

  • You are on to something.  It did grow -- a lot!

Now I need to figure out why.

    Thanks,

    Scott
