Hi all -
This is my first post here, so please forgive if I'm missing out on any local etiquette for this forum.
I have a test server for our DBA team, which has several instances of SQL 2k5 installed. Some are patched to SP2, some are not. Because at least one is patched to SP2, the following components all got patched to SP2:
SQL Server Native Client
SQL Server Setup Support Files
SQL Server VSS Writer
SQL XML 4
Now, I've been tasked with creating some visual documentation for installing SP2 on a NEW installation (screenshots, "Click Next at this screen", etc), but because these components are installed and patched already, when I install SP2 on my own (non-patched) instance for this purpose, those items are not getting updated as they normally would if this were a fresh install of SP2 - So therefore my screenshots and instructions aren't really accurate for when the documentation would actually be used.
Sorry for the diatribe, but my question is if I:
First - uninstall all of the above components
Second - install my own instance of SQL 2K5
Third - execute SP2 install on my instance
Will all of the above components be back to where they are today? And will I break anything in the interim for any other users of the server (using other instances, obviously).
Sorry if this is in the wrong place for this type of question - I'm very new to being a DBA (in training, per se).
Thanks much!

Workaround: install SQL2005 + SP2 on your own workstation. Make screenshots there.
Note: SQL Server 2005 Developer Edition and Evaluation Edition have the same feature set as the Enterprise Edition.

My workstation runs XP. If I needed to document the client components setup and patch, I could do this, but that doesn't get me where I need to be.
Thank you for responding, though.
I feel pretty confident that I can uninstall the items I listed that were already patched to SP2, and then install a fresh instance of 2K5, which will inistall those components again, but at the original version. Then I can apply SP2 to my new instance, plus those components, making it "look" like a fresh install and SP2 upgrade in the documentation.
At least that's my hope 🙂 I know I can locate the stand-alone install of the setup support files, so I'm at least safe there... I'm sure the other stand-alone installs for the other components are there, too, I just haven't looked.
Thanks again.
