When installing Sql server 6.5 (7) I could set up a "data" path such as "d:\mssql65\data" ("d:\mssql7\data"). Under Sql 2K, Microsoft insists on adding their own subdirectory so the best I can do is "d:\sql2k\MSSQL\data". Anyone know why they did this? Anyway around this?
TIA,
Bill

Been a while since I've installed it - thats a good thing! Cant answer why, but it's easy enough to change. There are registry entries that set the default data path plus the location of the master. You can stop the service, reconfigure your folders and change the registry to match, start back up. This will work for master only. If you're moving other db's you have to detach/attach.

Sorry I don't have a copy here with me today but I believe you can do a custom install which allows you to set these paths when you install. I will try to rememebr to double check tomorrow but I installed mine to another drive and don't remember having to change the paths.
