SQL 2012 with Windows Server 2008 or Windows Server 2012?

  • We're looking at migrating some of our SQL Servers to SQL 2012 (mainly for the BI improvements), but I'm wondering if it's worth upgrading the OS at the same time from Windows Server 2008 to Windows Server 2012.

I've been trying to find some articles giving what benefits SQL 2012 has running in Windows Server 2012 compared to Windows Server 2008 but have been unable to find anything.

    Does anyone know of anything?

  • Maybe the HyperV improvements?

  • A few things to consider:

    1) Windows 2008 does not take advantage of Second-Level dress Translation (SLAT), while Windows 2008 R2 and above does. This typically gives a 5% performance advantage when run on SLAT-capable processors.

    2) Windows 2012 in Core mode requires substantially fewer fixes than any of Windows 2012 with the desktop or Windows 2008 or Windows 2008 R2. This results in fewer reboots being needed when patching, and the reduction in Surface Area results in a more stable and secure system.

    3) SMB has been completely rewritten for Windows 2012. This means faster performance for network-attached storage if the host and client use Windows 2012 / Windows 8.

    4) As already said, there are improvements in Hyper-V in Windows 2012, and very significant improvements with Windows 2012 R2.

  • Thank you. No real advantages for us in using Windows 12 over 2008 R2 really.

Ed of course forgot to mention the slick Metro user interface! :w00t: 😎

Reason enough to upgrade if you ask me.

LOL, you must be joking 😛

  • You can avoid the learning curve of Metro and give your server a bit more performance by running it in Core mode.

We are only part-way through migrating from W2008R2 to W2012 Core but are already seeing the advantages in terms of stability and less patching.

Core doesn't support Reporting Services though, so a no-go for us for the particular server we're looking at migrating. Apart from that, I agree with your comments.
