I am somewhat confused as the guide for an " AlwaysOn Failover Cluster Instance" mentions the creation of "Availability groups".If my application is constantly creating new databases, do I need replace this step or skip it ?
This is because I simply want the instance to failover as a whole and whatever databases it contains not only for an Availability group.
Not sure if I misread the installation 🙁
much appreciated if someone can clear this up
The stairway takes the user through an FCI install in level 5 or an AO group setup in level 6.
Level 5 and 6 are not published yet so not sure how you are seeing an FCI install creating AO groups

So you are saying that all i need to follow is up to step 4 of your series for what i need leaving out the AG?

Levels 1 to 4 detail the requirements for a windows server failover cluster, this forms the basis of either an FCI or an AlwaysOn Availability group setup.
Level 5 details FCIs and a walk through of the setup.
Level 6 details AO groups and walks through a setup example.
Level 7 will detail combining FCIs as a replica in an AlwaysOn group.

You could reference my article here[/url] it details installing an FCI and then combining as a replica in an AlwaysOn group configuration. To install the FCI just follow the single url linked above

I just completed the installation on both nodes of the cluster by following the document above.
All seems to work well with a failover test but now in PART 4 I am at the stage of configuring an instance "combining as a replica in an AlwaysOn group configuration" ? I guess i will need to skip over the "select databases part in the AG section correct and just do the replica part correct ?
thx

you don't have an FCI to integrate so skip that, the portion that shows how to create an AO group will be relevant though

A i'm reading Part 4 doc, which portion regarding FCI are you saying that I DO NOT need to implement ?, i see I need to pretty much do all the steps in the whole document . I will only have 2 nodes in my cluster

I thought we determined that you don't need to set up an availability group. You should be done at this point. Fail Over Clusters and Availability groups are two completely separate things, although they can be combined if needed. Clusters were available long before Availability Groups existed. The term "Always On" was appended to failover clusters in version 2012 as a Branding or marketing gimmick.

Indeed it looks like i'm done then as my needs are to add or increment databases within the instance and allow for a seamless fail over to node 2 of the whole instance.
I was confusing the AO availability group setup as part of the FCI instance failover.
Not sure if I would need the "replica" part in AG would
Thanks for your help and I will see if a complete failover works after some databases are added to this primary instance.

sorry there's been so many posts here I'm lost in the myre now.
Do you want to deploy an FCI only?
If yes leave part 4 you don't need it
