I just want to confirm that it is possible to take a bak file from sql 2008 and restore it on sql 2008 r2.

Yes, but I am pretty sure you can't go from 2008 R2 to 2008.

Editions of SQL Server is not a problem when you do the restore its Version that matters and SQL server don't have backward compatibility.

Not completely true, if you have a database on Enterprise (or Developer) Edition using Enterprise only features you can't restore that database to a Standard Edition (or less) server.

Is that correct? I thought you could restore it but it simply wouldn't work.. I'll just have to trust you, not going to setup a testing setup to find out..

I was pleased to discover that while SQL Server R2 Express cannot create compressed backups, it can restore compressed backups created on Standard ot Enterprise Edition.
