SQL 2008 R2 Standard licensing for virtual environments

  • Hello all,

I checked the Microsoft licensing Quick reference, but didn't see anything that specifically said it wasn't legal, so I wanted to check here and see if someone could tell me. Is it legal to do host migrations in a Vsphere cluster with sql server 2008 R2 standard license? I am assuming it is not legal (other than the once every 90 days clause) even if I have the licenses to cover moving it to another machine. Nowhere does Microsoft talk about migrating standard edition, it's all about Enterprise and Data center. Please help.

    -Thanks

  • are you applying the licence at the VM level or the Hyper visor host level?

For std edition it only makes sense to apply the licence at the VM level, in which case you can move it where you want as long as there's only 1 copy of the VM. If you cloned it that would violate the EULA

  • my understanding was that you cannot apply a SQL 2008 R2 Standard license to the host level of a virtual environment, only to the guest level. Are you saying that if I apply a (sql)license to a guest OS, it allows that guest to migrate to other hosts? Doesn't that translate into application mobility? And thus isn't it disallowed per microsoft's PUR? That was my understanding, but that's why I'm asking.

  • you can assign at either host or guest level.

as you are using standard licences you can only host this at guest level

enterprise is 4 virtual machines at host level

data centre is unlimited machines at host level

you get the standard 30 day fail back rights on all editions

with standard as its at the guest level moving from vsphere host1 to vsphere host2 you don't need to fail back to host1 but if it's applied at host level you have to fail back within 30 days to remain compliant

Yes correct, my bad. You also cannot migrate the VM as there is no way of pinning the VM vCPUs to host physical CPUs. To move VMs around you require Enterprise or Datacenter edition.

my understanding was that you cannot apply a SQL 2008 R2 Standard license to the host level of a virtual environment,

if you licence all the physical cpus on the host you may only run SQL Server at the physical host level

  • Thank you guys, in fact none of the resources really gave me a clear picture, so I called microsoft. Ironically, I had to go to support to get the correct answer. I called, got a sales person and they said, sure you can migrate Standard VM's, so I asked for written documentation, so he forwarded me to pre-sales engineering, who promptly told me no, you cannot move Standard VM's, then proceeded to show me where in the PUR it was listed, so in the end, the answer is, you cannot use host migration with SQL standard UNLESS you have the physical hosts licensed with Enterprise or DC and have room (in the case of Enterprise) for the instance.

so in the end, the answer is, you cannot use host migration with SQL standard UNLESS you have the physical hosts licensed with Enterprise or DC and have room (in the case of Enterprise) for the instance.

    That sounds about right
