I downloaded sql server 2008 r2 sp1 from:
http://www.microsoft.com/download/en/details.aspx?id=26727
On the same SP download page we also find
SQLManagementStudio_x86_ENU.exe
Doesn't the first sp (for sql) include the second one (for Management Studio)? I had never see a SP just for Management Studio
TIA,

Generally, but I have seen service packs split, do you mean you're downloading service pack 1 ? in which case you shouldn't need a seperate ssms patch but there may be one for just patching the tools if that's all you use.

Thanks for the insight in SP's and "special" feature parts thereof.

no worries - it can be tricky sometimes, I seem to remember one sp which had so many file options and it took me three tries to get the right one.
