SQL 2008 R2 Cumulative update

  • Bit of a silly query...

I have a server thats a reel pain in the back side where SSAS is concerned. Its SQL 2008 R2 x64, SP1 was applied when its was released in the early part of June the R2 build is 10.50.2500.0.

Now is have seen today MicroSoft have released CU9 for R2 (16th Aug 11). Within this CU its looks like it may have a fix for a similar problem I am experiencing. The build for CU9 is 10.50.1804.0, as my build SP1 if higher than the CU9 build will the CU9 fixes be in the SP1 release despite the CU coming out 2 months later ? If not can I apply the CU9 hotfix on a server that is patched to SP1 ?

No you can not apply a RTM CU to SP1. You would need to apply a SP1 CU.

    As a note SP1 only had fixes through RTM CU4. SP1 CU1 brought SP1 up to RTM CU7. They have recently released 2008 R2 SP1 CU2: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2567714

It might fix some of your problems, but you might need to wait another couple months for SP1 CU3 to get all of the fixes in RTM CU9. (Or call Microsoft for a specific hotfix for an issue you have.)

This is one of the reasons I don't like to jump on new SPs right away, they usually lag behind the previous SP, or RTM, in terms of fixes through CUs.

  • Thanks for taking the time to explain that for me, SS.
