SQL 2008 R2 CU3, CU4, and SP1

  • Is anyone out there running SQL Server 2008 R2 with CU3 and/or CU4? Also - is anyone currently working with any sort of environment with Service Pack 1, and if so - have you seen any issues?

I am preparing a new upgrade for a client of mine (taking them from 2005 to 2008 R2 - customized upgrade of migrating data to temp tables, creating the tables fresh in R2, and then bringing data and objects back in there after), and want to see if anyone has any info on the recently released SP1 and previous CU's.

    Thank you!

  • did you run the upgrade adviser ? It will point to potential issues.

You should be able to just restore the database(s) in stead of a having to port all data.

(unless of course you intend to do more than plain upgrade)

Keep in mind to perform full db maintenance as one of the lasts steps of your operation.

I migrated our 6 R2 instances to SP1 without an issue, nor did the applications report any issues afterward.

    (knock on wood;-) )

  • Hey! No, I did the upgrade (RBPR) on purpose (back in March this year). It turned out to be a blessing in disguise because the way I went about it catches any changes to the schema that have happened since I first created the process.

I did not run the upgrade advisor, because it is a fresh new install of 2008 R2, and the db is going to be upgraded by my process.

The thing I am wondering is if I should choose to go with CU3, CU4 and then SP1, should I do it before any databases are attached? I know this sounds so fundamental, but since I am at the beginning, I'm just wondering if it matter.

    Thanks again...

  • why the hassle with cu3 and 4 before going to SP1 ??

SP1 = CU6+ ssms intellisence fix (bug after vs2010SP1) and maybe some more.

    if I'm correct : SP1+SP1CU1 = RTM+CU8

I would directly go for SP1 and then start using the engine.
