I can't get Server Agent to 'start' on my install of Express Edition. I did some research and it seems that server agent is not 'supported' or part of the software?
Does that seem correct? How would a DBA setup a backup job in this environment?
Any feedback would be appreciated........

It is not so much that the agent is not supported, the functionality is not actually present in the express editions.
Features Supported by the Editions of SQL Server 2008 R2
If you need to schedule a job you will need to setup a scheduled task that runs a SQL script via a utility like SQLCMD or PowerShell.

Allthough the SQL Agent service is installed with SQL Express, it is not possible to start it. The SQL Express version doesn't include (a working) SQL Agent.
If you want to perform scheduled tasks, like backups, you will need to create a SQLCMD command to do it and schedule this command using the Windows Scheduler.
