SQL 2008 Express and SQL 2005 Express on same system

  • Is it possible to run SQLX 2005 and SQLX 2008 on the same system? Do you have to un-install SQLX2005 and install SQLX2008 first. Then install SQLX2005? or is there a REGEDIT to modify?

  • I don't think so it is actually a better setup so you can compare, I have 2005 Express, Developer and 2008 Developer all in one box.

  • If I'm using SQLX 2008 and make changes to a customer databases that uses SQLX 2005. Will the be usable?

  • There is no need for that install 2005 Advanced services with SP3 and install 2008 Advanced services as a named instance and you could connect to your customer with 2005. You need to remove the standard Express to install the Advanced services. The reason it is almost like the full version of SQL Server.

Longest the database stays on 2005; and you are just using SQL 2008 tools to talk to the 2005 server no issues. If you upgrade the database to 2008 by (backup/restore or detach/attach) then you cannot go back to 2005.

    Thanks.
