SQL 2005 Service Pack 2 Timeline

  • We're setting an hour maintenance window for our 300G database for tomorrow evening. Should that be enough time to apply Service Pack 2?

Just wanting to gauge everyone's experiences with this; is it just as easy as stopping the SQL Agent, applying SP2, then restarting the Agent? No full reboot of the server itself?

    Thanks everyone!

  • You need to restart sql server services. Also it would be good if you reboot the server so that it takes effect at that moment itself.

  • Works best if you shutdown all services (sql server, agent, browser, fulltext, etc.), then apply to avoid a reboot. Personally I still prefer to reboot the server after applying for safe practice.

Depends on the speed of your server really. I've spent 10 minutes on a service pack, and I've spent over an hour ...

  • A bit late, but be sure you research the issues from SP2, especially with maintenance plans. You might want to prep CU2 or 3 as well.
