SQL 2005 Installed But Service Manager Did NOT

  • Howdy Gang,

I have installed 2005 and added SP2 but I get a failure to install Client Tools, especially the Service Manager suite. I can check and see that the db engine is running, it will accept connections and run queries, but I do not have a tool for graphical management.

Have any of you experienced this and, if so, what was the problem?

  • What exactly are you missing. You say"especially the Service Manager suite". If you mean the small utility which in SQL 2000 sits in the system tray, that no longer exist in 2005. The functionality is now in Configuration Manager which you should find under Microsoft SQL Server 2005\Configuration Tools in your start menu.

If you really want to have the service manager old style back have a look here:

  • Weeelllllllll, the outcome of this story is quite interesting.

After spending the afternoon chasing event logs and poking around in all manner of places, the sysadmin who moved the 2005 install files on the server discovered he had missed a folder. Yup, prolly ain't gonna work without all the pieces.

Thanks for all you suggestions, they were quite helpful.
