sql 2005 install on Windows 2008

    Hi friends,

    Can you please let me know if we can install SQL Server 2005(standard edition) on Windows 2008 server or if it has to be Windows 2008 R2 or 2012. I googled on the requirements and compatibility, it looks like SQL server 2005 has to be at SP3. But I'm not sure if it is right..

    Also, does the SQL server install require a specific version of .Net Framework?

    I think you can (go to msdn.com to find out for sure.

    SQL 2005 has been retired fyi.

    I'm looking at MSDN, but it is not clear to me whether if I will have to install SQL server 2005 first and then install the Service packs or if I can install SQL Server SP3 one time.

    THis is for a client project who are still on SQL 2005.. We are pushing them to upgrade to SQL 2008 but at this point we are not sure if they are upgrading so we are going ahead with SQL 2005 install.

    I think SQL Server 2008 is supported on Windows 2008.

    Please help..

    It's interesting, a Google search does not return any useful info. Apparently Microsoft has pulled anything abut 2005. Another reason to upgrade I suppose.

    All I can say is, give it a try. The installer will alert you if the version of SQL you are trying to install is not supported or if there are "known compatibility issues."

    You should be able to install SQL Server 2005, but you will get a pop-up a couple of times that you will need to apply a service pack right after your install. You can go straight to SP4. Service packs are cumulative, so SP4 will contain all the changes from previous service packs.

    Microsoft did for some strange reason pull the MS download links for SQL Server 2005 service packs, but the SQL Server Release Services guys put the link to SP4 in the update catalog.
