SQL 2000 SP3 concerns

  • I am a new Admin for a series of SQL 2000 clusters for the Navy.  I have been tasked with researching any potential problems with applying SQL 2000 SP3 to six different SQL clusters.  They are all Win2K Adv Servers machines, patched to Win2K SP4, with nothing else running on them.  The hardware for the most part is Dell 4350's and 1650 Blades.  Any thoughts or experiences which would be helpful?

    Thanks.

  • You have to perform extensive test before you know the impact to your database and application.

We have seen performance decrease largely after applied sp3a to our very busy SQL Server due the the query parallel execution that created very heavy worksloads to I/O subsysytem.

  • The patch should apply fine and you shouldn't experience any problems from the admin side, however the functionality of SP3 is slightly different. Lots of security changes, but also some bugs that your app expected are patched and there could be other side effects.

As Allen mentioned, you need to test.
