Followup: The hanging multiple processes "sqlmaint" occurred again.
I seperated out a backup of the largest db into another seperate maintenance plan and ran it a few hours earlier.
This has cleared up the problem of multiple processes occurring of 'sqlmaint' and all jobs run clean now.
I'm unclear as to why the original job caused multiple instanced of processs sqlmaint to start but that seemed to be the core of the problem.

All:I have found the culpret! If you specify to verify the backup, this is what is causing the job/plan to hang. I removed it and all the backups in the job/plan ran successfully without intervention. Now the question is what will fix the problem in the first place! Not sure if this is addressed by a service pack and don't think any new hot fixes or service packs will be released for this. Any ideas?
Regards,
How long did you wait to conclude that the verify failed? This is not a 2 sec operation.

SSCoach:In some instances, the job hang was not discovered for 2 or more days. The job/plan will hang indefinately at the restore headeronly step until it is killed, or as some others have done, stopping the SQL Server Agent and re-starting it (which kills all the agent jobs running).
Ok thanks.
Usually the verify is pretty much just as long as the backup itself... just wanted to make that clear :-).
