Hi,
The scenario is we are going to upgrade from SQL 2000, it has been decided to skip SQL 2005 and go for SQL 2008. The question is can SQL 2008 (Katmai) be installed on a server currently running SQL 2000. I have read various blogs and articles that imply either, it can't be done, or that it can be done but with some inherent risks to the SQL 2000 installation.
Existing installation
SQL 2000 (Standard Edition)
SQL Service pack build 2187
Windows 2000 SP 4
P4(x4) 3400 MHz
3583 MB RAM

They will run side-by-side without issues - but remember that SQL 2008 has not been released. Installing a release candidate or beta on a production server is probably not a great idea.
Pre-release versions of SQL have traditionally not played nice in side-by-side deployments and also have not had a great track record with uninstalls.

Many thanks for the replies, this will be on a development server so I think we'll give it a go.

Even with a development server, I would test your planned configuration on a Crash & Burn server first.
Also, when you do make the move to SQL Server 2008, I recommend you run it on a 64-bit OS if at all possible. It will run happily on a 32-bit OS, but we are all saying goodbye to 32-bit so it is simply not a good choice for a new environment.
