Good question, and easy if one has ever experienced orphaned transactions. Even in the Books-On-Line, this one is hard to find (there's just one reference to the -2 value).
Overall, a good question to start the week.

Excellent question. I've never experienced an orphaned distributed transaction so I had to research this one before answering.

Yes, it is a good question. But BoL contains more than one reference to the -2 value; it's on the KILL page, the sp_who page, the sp_lock page, the sys.sysprocesses page, and the sys.dm_tran_locks page so that's at least 5 BoL pages that describe it; probably there are more.
