I'm getting a little overwhelmed with these unsolicited emails from techtargetlists.com. I repeatedly unsubscribed over the past few weeks, but it appears that you keep adding new lists and new subscription categories popup daily.
What the deal with this? Can we reduce the spam abuse on my email address that I gave to sqlservercentral.com
Valuable real email subscription: The SPAM I'm getting from techtargetlists.com is unrelated to the real EMAIL subscriptions I get from subscriptions@sqlservercentral.com which are quite valuable.

I'm not sure this is a problem with sqlservercentral.com. Have you contacted techtargetlists.com?

Lately I'm swimming in spam messages from fake addresses that come from (supposedly) a .es domain email address, like 'santos2@telecable.es'; (I hope SSC can fix that for me too...just kidding)
it seems like they are such garbage that they are doing nothing more than seeing if the mail server rejects it the spam-message as an invalid email address for me; easily 400+ per day right now, as I look over my spam filters;
is the techmessages or whatever similar, where they are just garbage to testr email validity, or are they really correspondence form a "real" site?

Well I know SQLServerCentral gave my email address to techtarget and techtargetlists. I know this because the email address I used is JohnSQLServerCentral @ [my company domain]. I do this to protect myself and to see who's selling the goods.
SQLServerCentral is related to Red Gate Software UK. Their lousy privicy policy is listed here, http://www.sqlservercentral.com/About/Privacy/. Check out paragraph #2.1 and #2.2. Blatent disregard for all of our email addresses.
July 21, 2009 at 11:03 am
Then I suggest you contact RedGate as specified in 2.2.
Personally, I've never received any emails from sites I didn't personally visit and request, including TechTarget.

I've been here for quite some time and have never received spam because of my association with the site. Before you slam the community, be sure it's SSC. Somehow, I don't believe it is....

I'm not slamming the community. The community here is terrific and very knowledgeable, the invaluable newsletters and forums, which is why I'm here and why I care enough to speak out.
Red Gate UK, the "service provider" of SQLServerCentral.com, and other sites via Simple Talk Publishing, exists to generate revenue, which is totally ok, the newsletters contain advertisements and the websites have banner ads. But selling email addresses to 3rd parties, that's pushing it. The undeniable fact is that they sold the email address I used exclusively when I signed up to SQLServerCentral. No doubt about it.
Some good news, I successfully heard back from TechTarget about their removal procedures, and I'm awaiting to hear back from privacy@SQLServerCentral.com
Enough of this topic.

I have read the privacy statement and I don't see anything there that says that they sell their lists. They won't even send you thier own marketing emails if you don't want them. So, again, I really don't think SSC is the culprit here.

Both SQLServerCentral and Simple talk have my sql-related email and I have never received an email of any form from techtarget or techtargetlists. If either SSC or RedGate had sold their email lists, then I should be getting exactly the same spam as you are (the email address I use has has no server-side spam filter). I'm not.
Are you sure that no one inside your company could have sold all of the company's mail addresses? It was a problem that I had at the bank I used to work for. People used to sell the company contact list, with email addresses and phone numbers.

Maybe they only sell the most recent and the freshest 100,000 email addresses. The "About" webpage here claims 819,000 members. I signed up on Feb 2nd 2009. The newer the email address, the more value when selling them.
My software development company has under 50 employees. In addition to SQL DBA, I 'also serve as the Domain Administrator. I've been at this for 20 years, remember DOS and dBase? No one on our side is selling email addresses.
Email addresses: I use a different email address for every single public outside contact, be it JohnSQLServerCentral@ or JohnAmazon@, or JohnYahoo@, etc. I've been doing this email alais'ing for 10+ years. In reality, I catch far less email sellers than I originally anticipated there'd be. The selling of JohnSQLServerCentral@ was the first in a while, and frankly a disappointment.

Actually, I remember when personal computers were hobbist assembled. What does that have to do with the price of tea in China or wether SSC or RedGate did or didn't sell your email address?
Personally, I'd be surprised if they did considering I've never seen anything to indicate that they do that sort of thing. RedGate is a Software Company, not a Publishing House.

Very well, thank you. The first PC that I built for myself was an 8086 (XT). Do you remember GWBasic? Crystal Basic? The CP/M operating system? What's my IT qualifications and history got to do with anything anyway?
I know Steve Jones personally. I cannot see him allowing or condoning the selling of email addresses from a site that he runs. I have mailed him, so as soon as he sees his email I'm sure he will respond.
Again, I seriously doubt that anyone here sold your or anyone else's email addresses.

maybe one of the articles required registration on another site, so you duplicated the same email for registration for that article? check your cookies or firefoxes saved passwords...see if you registered somewhere without noticing

Steve does sometimes put links to TechTarget in the daily newsletter. We've had a few people who didn't realise it was a separate site and complained about having to register a second time.

I remember reading a couple of complaints about that myself.
