Just read a 'Warning' regarding SP4-that anyone running SQL Server 2000 with AWE enabled should not install SP4, however, if you have a maximum (SQL Server) memory set of less than 50% of the actual memory-you don't have to worry about this bug-so it reads, but does that mean for example if I have a total of 8GB RAM on my server and SQL Server has been limited to use MAX 2GB of it-I can still install SP4? Anyone with a similar concern?

Funny, if that is true, then it is so, if you have clustered, and multiple instances (ie. 4) then it is no problem to install SP4? For as long no one of the 4 instances has the max mem setting to more than half of the amount of available memory... Very curious...

I recently applied SP4 on our standalone network but now find I can't backup the model database. Anybody any ideas apart from going back to the last known good backup ?

Hi Hans,
Read this under Service Pack 4 download-http://www.microsoft.com/sql/downloads/2000/sp4.mspx.

Are you getting an error message when performing the backup and if so, what is it?

Check out this post - plenty of discussion of SP4 and the issue with instances running AWE - http://www.sqlservercentral.com/forums/shwmessage.aspx?forumid=5&messageid=182669

Hi,
Well I got a hold of an 'unofficial' fix for the AWE problem with SP4- I will perform tests today and post the results here.

I installed the 'fix' and now the AWE (memory allocation) problem is solved. I am going to monitor the systems I installed it on and if I encounter any problems I will post them at the end of the week.
