I'm trying to install sp4 for sql 2000 and I can't get past the "authenticating User" part. It stays on that screen "Authenticating User" for as long as 15 minutes before I cancel it. I never get an error message or anything.
Here is the last part of the sqlsp.log file I've got:
09:28:14 Begin Action ShowDialogsHlpr: 0x2000
09:28:14 Begin Action: DialogShowSdUpgrade
09:28:14 ShowDlgUpgrade returned : 1
09:28:14 Checking databases on instance 'MSSQLSERVER'
09:28:14 Authenticate access
09:28:14 Begin SDPassword Dialog
09:28:21 End SDPassword Dialog
09:28:21 C:\DOCUME~1\acf000\LOCALS~1\Temp\SqlSetup\Bin\scm.exe -Silent 1 -Action 6 -Service MSSQLSERVER
09:28:45 Process Exit Code: (0)
09:28:45 C:\DOCUME~1\acf000\LOCALS~1\Temp\SqlSetup\Bin\scm.exe -Silent 1 -Action 1 -Service MSSQLSERVER -StartupOptions \-T4022
The following is a more detailed account of what happened:
This is a test box that we are using to simulate an upgrade to the newest Peoplesoft. It has peoplesoft & webtrends on the same box as the SQL server.
We have sql sp3a on it. The peoplesoft guys installed peoplesoft , and I go over to install sp4. Logged on as one of them (they are local admins), I began the installation of sp4, using Windows authentication to do the install. It took a long time to get past the authenticating user (A good 5 minutes), but it eventually does, and begins doing the next step like "Preparing for installation" or something like that. It stays on that screen for 15 minutes, so I decided to kill it. I reboot the server. I log on as a domain admin. This time it hangs on the "authenticating user" section for 10 minutes -- so I kill install again. I reboot and try again, ony using the sa account instead of my windows account. It still hangs for 10 minutes. I kill it again and realize that peopesoft services may be causing my issues. I reboot again and this time I stop all Peoplesoft-related services. I also stop webtrends and IIS. I triple-check to make sure all services are stopped. I restart the SQL server to make sure all connections are removed. Then I start the sp4 installation again. I use the sa account to log in, but it still hangs on "Authenticating User" -- for 15 minutes. I killed it again and here I am.
I've never experience that section of any SQL service pack taking that long to authenticate. Any ideas anybody?

Perry,
I bet it is a good server! The similar thing happened to me 3 times with SQL Server installation and with SP3A installation on 3 different servers all of which were very good new boxes, better then other ones that are without problems. The difference was big hard drives I guess. It took about an hour to install SQL server and another hour for the service pack. Each task including just configuring InstallShield took 10-15 min while on other servers it takes under a minute. Each time installation was local, other (non-SQL install) performance is excellent, SQL was installed before anything else, right on the top of Windows. All my servers are set up by the same server support in a similar manner. Now these servers have excellent database performance.
It is my assumption that SQL Server or SP install programs have to check your hardware. I too will be grateful for more meaningful explanations.

I'm having the same error here, I have SQL Server 2003 on a failover cluster, when the scm command is executed it waits for almost 30 minutes and then sends a timeout for the operation, i found out that scm -Action 1 means start the sql server...
If anyone can help it will be greatly appreciated.

Fortunately for me, it was a non-production box. The box has since then been formatted and used for something else. I did have an E-ticket into MS for the issue, but the 1st tier support (From China) was having me do too much stuff and I didn't have time for it, so i canceled the ticket. So I never did figure out the issue. Sorry I wasn't more help for some of you other guys who are having the same issue.
