Has anyone encountered this: I attempted to install SQL Server 2000 SP4 on a Windows 2003 standard edtion server. The installation proceeds normally until it reaches the point where it says "Setup is initializing the server for the upgrade process". This is as far as the install gets, it just hangs at this point. I waited at least 15 minutes and nothing happened. So we stopped the install, restarted the server and again attempted the install, with the same result. I ran a query on serverproperty, product level and it shows SP4! (I know it was SP3a before we started) So I am not sure what is happening here. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

I had these cases several times when installing SPs on somebody else's servers. This somebody has a preference to have different permissions to admins account to different drives. For example, SQL Server startup account has rights to the Data drive. The account that is installing an SP does have rights to the system drive (can start the installation, was authenticated OK at the beginning of the installation) but does not have rights to the drive or folder with database files. Now this person makes sure the accounts that we are going to use have full rights and permissions on all drives and folders.

Yelena,
So you think we may have a permissions issue? I don't believe we have our security set this way but I will check 'casue you never know! Thanks!

I had this problem on a server with a FireWire interface, seems that when Windows Server 2003 was installed a "network adapter" was installed in addition to the "standard" NIC card adapter, it is called 1396 Net Adapter. When I disabled this device in Device Manager, SP4 installed with any issues.
I am not saying that this is your problem, but it is something to check for.

Yelena,
Could not find the problem, so I deinstalled SQL Server and reinstalled which of course allowed me to install SP4 without error. We do have another server that is a twin to our problem server which we will need to install SP4, I will let you know how that comes out. Thanks again for your help!
