Why am I getting "Error running script: sp1_serv_uni.sql(1)"?

It may be that another local process is jumping in first in single user mode.
Your error message has a high hit rate in Google Groups (http://groups.google.com/). Search on "Error running script: sp1_serv_uni.sql(1)" and you'll see some successful workarounds and diagnosis tips posted.

I found Q article 306908 as a good resource when updating SQL Server. One of the statments in this article address this very error. The fix is to restart the computer and run Setup again.

I solved this by replacing the \system\dbmslpcn.dll file with one from the Service Pack 3 fileset. Then I was able to install SP3 with no errors.
