SOX compliance for recovery models

  • Hi all ... I am a grad student doing research ... I was wondering if anyone knew if there is a standard for recovery models that would be compliant with SOX ... I have only found documents and references describing how to do backups and test recovery, but no information on recovery models ... i.e. if you have an archive database that is only updated with data once a day, would a simple recovery plan be sufficient to comply? ... there a full backup made of the database nightly, but Tran log has reached over 25GB, currently logging with a full model ...

    Thank you ...

  • I do not know much of anything about SOX ... but before you get underway with questions, are you familiar with each recovery model and their purpose? I'm not sure if SOX has different policies or anything, but your questions are pretty straight forward and easy to answer depending on the business rules.

If you're not familiar with the recovery models and their purposes, I'd recommend reading this first:

    http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms175987.aspx

  • I am some-what famillier with receovery modes ... I understand that under simple receovery un-commited trans will be lost, while in full or bulked, they can be receovered based on the check-points ...

and to your point, it seems like an easy question, since no one is persumably touching the data, a full backup with simple recovery mode should be suffcient ... I just didn't know if there is a metric or a guidline when it comes to SOX compliance regarding the topic of recovery models ...

  • I see ... well, then to your question, sadly I do not know then. Compliance is one of those areas I haven't had the pleasure of dealing with.

    Best of luck though.
