figured it out anyway.
Well enough to know that its still not air tight. You create a project and then have to script all your objects out into seperate files (sql9 removed this funtion doh). then using the solution expolorer in SSMS you can check them in and out for editing. Unfortunatly on the right hand side of the screen remains the object browser which allows to to edit your SPs as usual.
Why cant they just let you set it up so there is no way to edit DB objects without checking out the definition first.
