Solution files and project files

  • Hi,

We will be gradually moving over from business objects Enterprise - crystal reports to SSRS 2008 and I find there is an issue to where reports are saved.

In crystal reports we simply saved the reports to Enterprise and any user in our team is able to access the report and edit it and then resave it back to Enterprise.

With SSRS we are finding that it works differently and we are saving our solution files either locally or on a shared drive on our network. This causes some issues as we have quite a large number of reports in different folders on our system, and users who create the reports and save them on the netwwork are difficult to find as the folder structure on the network is not in the same folder structre as our report manager.

What I want to know is where are forum users saving their solution files ? or do you just save the files locally and then when a team member wants to edit a report you just open the report from the server and edit it locally with a solution file on your pc.

and what does microsoft recommed, I can't seem to find any info on this.

    Thanks

  • I tend to use one or another source control solution for this. That's the recommended practice on just about any sort of file that can be modified by multiple devs.

  • Hi, thanks for your reply do you have an example of another source control solution?

    Thanks

  • I store files locally, and keep them in source control. We used a 3rd party program for that named Fortress, and it integrates properly with BIDS 2008. It puts little icons next to each report that indicates whether it's checked out, and whether the local copy is current or not, etc. Right clicking lets you view the report history or compare differences between versions.

  • Hi, thanks for this, how are your solution files sorted? do you have a singe solution for for each report? or do you have multiple projects in a report solution?

The issue we have is that there are number of developers who develop the reports which are depoyed to report manager and the folder structure for these reports is different to the folder structure for the report solution files, so it is sometime quite difficulet to locate the solution file for a report. Or should we just adopt a single report single solution approach and have all the reports saved in a single folder?

I will have a look at the fortress software, do you have link to it?

    Thanks

We have one solution with multiple projects, and each project has its own folder with multiple reports inside.

I'm not sure I understand, but you could save multiple solutions in Fortress without any problems, or you could consolidate everything first. I'm a neat person so I consolidate and organise things.

It's developed by SourceGear. There could be free alternatives, and I didn't set it up, but it was already in place for the project I'm working on currently and it seems to work okay 🙂

  • Thanks I will try and use your example and create a single solution with multiple projects.

🙂 are there any things to note about the fortress software?
