    We are getting ready to apply the MS08-040 security patch to our servers and my managers would like to know what the difference is between a GDR release and a QFE release. I already know which update I need to apply, but a definition of these terms would be nice.

    A GDR is a general release which MS reckon should be installed - or is important enough to be installed - on any live SQL Server instance. QFE's are fixes where it's not considered that important (unless you're suffering from the particular issue it addresses)
