Do we really need a different database for every service in SOA? if yes then why ?

No. Why would that need to be the case? I'm working with a vendor who is service-enabling our banking transaction system. We haven't decided on the service granularity yet, but there will be several different services all acting on the core database.

I agree but my team member have a different approach. I am still trying to understand their logic.

If one is implmenting applications for different client of similiar business and out them all in one DB. You are putting all eggs in one basket (single point of failure for all your customer. Any also it restricted ones ability to sparate each client's data cleanly. They may share some common table/data.
