I only get a single line to put my messages in so everything has to be typed in one enormous paragraph. and I don't get an email notification when others reply to my posts even though the Email me when members reply to this post is ticked. For example I was not aware that anyone had replied to http://www.sqlservercentral.com/forums/post.aspx?forumid=8&messageid=101197. Is this something I am doing wrong or a general problem?????????

One single line to type in your message? I only have this problem when using not IE, but Opera or Mozilla.

I am using Internet Explorer 5.50. And I did not get notification of your reply

Stefan,
I also had the problem you are experiencing. I needed to upgrade to IE 6.0 and that solved the single line and no email notification.

Thanks for the info, I am always reluctant to upgrade anything in the office because it is guaranteed to break something else. Spoken to our techies and Internet Explorer 6 is fine but if I do it myself it apparantly won't work with our Citrix Servers as they have a fix. I will be raising a ticket for them to fix. Will let you know how I get on.

Apologies. This is a strange one that Andy has been working to track down. Seems to work with IE6 and Mozilla 1.6 for me very consistently.

Oh joy, I now have IE6 and get a proper window to type in.
I wonder whether automated emails works when other members reply

I use Mozilla 1.6, and I still get just the one line instead of a true TEXTAREA. Windows XP Pro

Frank, I did not get a notification of your message but I did get a notification on another post after I went in and changed my email address in profile and then changed it back again.Hopefully I will now get all notifications.Just one other point, I noticed that the edit window when you reply to postings take a lifetime to open because of the time it takes to render all the fancy graphics, especially down the right hand side. Is it possible to turn these off or do I need to get a faster PC to use SQLServerCentral.

I hear you!
At home with only a 56k modem it's a real pain, but at work there is no huge delay at all. So I would suspect that no your PC is the problem, but rather your internet connection.
What might be an alternative is to use the mailing list of SSC. I became this week aware of it.
You can find it here http://www.sqlservercentral.com/other/discussionlists.asp

Success
Frank, I received notification of your last message so changing the email address in profiles must have been the solution.
In the office we have a thick cable to the Internet but I guess that our LAN and a large number of users slows it down.
At home I am still on IE5.5 but do have broadband so might be OK.
I have signed up for the discussion list - but doesn't that rather defeat the object if the discussion takes place there rather than in the forums?? Are these two not competiting with each other?

To steal Kenneth' slogan: 'It depends...'
A lot of people seem to prefer mailing lists rather the webforums.

The forum software just supports global on/off of the fancy stuff, Im in the middle of making it configurable per user. Get a lot of people that like the stuff, a lot that dont!

Hey, turns out I was further along than I thought. I've added a switch to the profile to allow you to turn off the fancy editor AND I think fixed the one line message entry problem. Let me know.
