Snapshot or restore point for Windows before performing in-place upgrade to SQL 2008

  • Hi,

We have a 3 node A/A/P cluster setup for SQL Server 2005. Node1 has 1 instance and Node2 has 4 instances & Nod3 is passive. We want to perform in-place upgrade to SQL server 2008.

I wondering is there way to take snapshot of the 3 nodes (Windows 2003 level) prior to perform the in-place upgrade and able to restore in case the upgrade fails & need to go back to SQL server 2005?

You guys consider any windows kind of backups/image or only depend on SQL Server backups to go back in case worst case scenario when the upgrade fails?

    Please provide your inputs

    Thanks

  • Any idea on how to backup on OS level before the upgrade and in worst case if the upgrade fails can we go back to the point where we are before the start of SQL upgrade?

    thanks

  • I think we have an option to convert physical to virtual (P2V) and applications will start pointing to virtual server in case if any emergency. I have tested with stand alone machine but i am not sure about the cluster.
