Size of a backup file

  • Can anyone tell me why the size of my 2 month old database backup file is about 10% greater than the size of the current database files?

    Thanks.

  • Perhaps you have deleted some data since you took that particular backup..?

What version of SQL Server are you using? If it's 2008 then you might be using one of the compression modes on your database.

Difficult to give a definitive answer unless you provide more details.

  • This may happen as the full backup consists of transactions from the log which are not written to datafile at the time of backup completion.

Eh? How would that provide a clue as to why backups are bigger than the database?
