size limit for text file

  I am not sure if this is the right place to post my question. since my question is related to DTS so here it comes.

  I try to write a DTS to export data from SQL Server to a text file. Even the size of field of the text file shows (in the DTS propperty window) as 3000 but the actual size  of output data is much smaller, around 256. Am I doing something wrong or that is the limit of the text file.
