As the OP states

OP related it to a Backup filesize context, which did not play a role.
Nowadays, 500MB isn't that huge, but if OP needs to keep his drive space and this is a yearly event, I wouldn't mind shrinking.

I wouldn't either, as a once-off operation after said yearly event.
