There is no proper planning for this type of task. It should be used on rare occasions where a one-off process has spiked the log file to an unreasonable size that is not indicative of actual day-to-day utilization. Log backups at appropriate intervals can/will keep the log size reasonable. Poor maintenance planning does not make this a "proper planning" item - IMO
