Should Visual Studio and/or SSDT be install on production

  • Hello,

I have a BI_Stack configuration (DB, SSIS, SSAS, SSRS 2012) production environment, and I would like to know if it makes any sense installing Visual Studio and/or SSDT tools on a production environment. It seems to me that these tools should be installed on DEV and QA environments only, and if you need to deploy a change to Prod simply use SSDT to deploy. Is this correct?

    Any help is appreciated.

  • No. There is no reason whatsoever to install those tools on the production server.

Maybe SSMS. Suppose the network is down and you can only access the server physically. (I hope that never happens)

  • Nuts, duplicate question. I said the same thing at the other location.

Please don't cross post. It just confuses conversations. Most of us look at multiple forums anyway.

  • Thanks Koen - I figured that but just wanted to be sure. I have worked in a lot of environments that did not have the budget to use BI-Stack correctly. So EVERYTHING was installed on one box.

    Appreciate the feedback 🙂

  • My bad about the duplicate post. I thought I didn't ask the question correctly 😀
