My Infrastructure department wants to patch VS Shell on my SQL servers. I know it's used for SSMS, which we like to keep version-matched on our SQL boxes. I found one article by Microsoft which states upgrading VS would require uninstalling and installing a newer version of SSMS, which we are trying to avoid (maybe we're old fashioned, but we like to have a version-matched SSMS on the server).
My question is, does anyone know what would happen to SSMS if VS Shell gets patched on the server? My inclination is to leave it alone as a supporting piece of software installed for the specific version of SSMS.
Thanks.
