I am a relatively new dba looking after 18 SQL Servers, some of them Version 7, some of them 2000. Looking at the Service Packs installed, there are 9 Servers that do NOT currently have the lastest Service Pack installed.
My question is, is it always best practice to have the latest SP installed? I thought it was, and was about to investigate installing them, but then I read an article that said NOT to ALWAYS install the latest SP, but to check that you really needed to first.
Does anybody have any opinions on this?
Thanks,
Liz

We do have 4 environments, DEV/SYS/ACC/PROD, and I install the latest on the DEV first, test for problems, if no problems arise, I install on SYS and ACC, then I install on PROD. It takes some good testing, but I always try to have the latest SP's installed as soon as possible.
Remember some virus'es that used some faults in SQL Server 2000, you do not want them to get hold on your servers...

Same here though I can tell you that 818 is the most stable patch out right now and wouldn't move to another patch unless its to fix a specific problem.
