Hi folks
First the problem, a customer of mine has a bad computer (sql wise) environment. A bunch of expresses, a few old sql 2000 and i got the job to structure up this as neither we or the customer is pleased with its current database environment.
There are about ~25 databases sizes 500mb-3gb and i would say ~50-200 users, i expect environment to grow maybe 2-4 new systems / year. Amount of users wont grow that much.
I've have two approaches for this...
1. As we already have a wmware environment with 2 ESX hosts, I'm thinking of putting in a new ESX and install the sql on this. If we go this way the costs will go up as we will buy 24-32gb of ram and a bunch of other stuff.
2. A stand alone server 12-16gb of ram
No matter what solution both machines will have 2*quad cores ~2.33 or more ghz. Connection to SAN.
I need to present both solutions. My own opinion is to go ESX way since systems are rather small and they don't require extreme performance. But i have to motivate the costs since ESX ain't free and with ESX way we need more ram and some other stuff.
What do you folks think opinions/ experiences........ will this be a good aproach or ??

Virtualization does have a performance penalty for SQL Server, but it has the advantage (if set up correctly) that it can handle one part of a virtualized cluster going down, without losing the whole cluster. Also has advantages for upgrading hardware later. You probably already know both of those things, so I'm really not sure what you're looking for here.
My recommendation would be to talk to the people in charge of making that decision, go over pros and cons, answer questions, and let them decide.

Standard answer, It Depends. You may want to do a cost/benefit and ROI analysis of both approaches.
