Is it fine to shut down the sql server 2000 and sql server 2005 services while doing P2V.
We are doing hot conversion so need to keep the system quite. Apart from not letting user
enter the database, we have decided to shut down the sql server services also. Do you think it is a good idea?

we have a few SQL VM's in our enterprise, personally unless there was a drastic need i would prefer to do a fresh build of the SQL server and migrate the databases, users, etc across to the new machine.
if you must P2V then stopping the SQL services will ensure no transactional access can take place

We were told by Dell that ALL services and applications that might have files open must be stopped and closed before the P2V process. The only exceptions were core windows services that could not be stopped.
In other words, SQL Server should be stopped when running the conversion.
