HI.
we have a sql server 2000 service pack 2 machine that is running on win nt OS. The sql server will be upgraded to service pack 3a and the OS will soon be upgraded to a Windows 2000 Server, service Pack 4 OS.
Can someone give me their recommendation as to which upgrade should be done first since both have to be performed?

Juanita,
We definitely know SQL Server 2000 SP3A runs on Windows 2000 Server, Advanced Server, and Datacenter Server with any service packs.
However, the DBA, has the responsibility to ensure the behavior of SQL Server and user databases do not change in a negative way when modifying the operating environment (i.e. upgrading either the SQL Server itself or the operating system).
If you are the DBA and your neck is on the line I suggest to minimally performing the following steps:
- Create a Test Environment with the new OS and the new release of SQL Server
- Test SQL Server DBA functions
- Test SQL Server-based applications from client machines
If everybody is happy, perform the upgrade in the Production Environment.
