Service Manager, SQL Server 2000

  • Hi -

Recently, one of our developers went to our TEST database server to pause/stop the test database. Service Manager was used to accomplish this.

When selecting a server from the drop down list, a production server in the list was mistakenly selected, and consequently shut down.

Is there a way to remove any production servers from the Service Manager drop down list of servers on our TEST box? Our test server is running SQL 2000. And to add to the complexity, Enterprise Manager will not run on this TEST server.

    Thanks!

  • I thought this was based on servers registered in EM. At least on that workstation.

There's probably something in the registry.

  • Would you happen to know what the commands are that ...

    - would list what servers are in the registry

    - would remove servers from the registry

Also, I was wondering if it would be advisable to simply remove the icon for Service Manager and only allow for command level (tsql?) shutdown/pause of databases.

    Thank you for the help!

  • I'm not sure, but don't you have to have certain rights In SQL Server to be able to shutdown/pause the server? If so, this may be a way to control this from happening...make sure the developers don't have rights on the Prod servers.

Perhaps a DBA could comment on this.

If it was easy, everybody would be doing it!;)
