I understand that what I am about to ask will come across as very general, but I need start somewhere!!!
I have been tasked with building a data warehouse for my employer. I have zero experience with this!!! I do have a good deal of experience with SSIS, just not building ETL for a DW. One aspect they want me to figure out is what kind/how fast/how beefy does the server need to be for a DW. To that, I have no idea. I have assumptions and I have been attempting to research this, but I read so many different things, its hard figure out whats legit and what makes sense for what I am trying to do.
Can anyone please weigh in on this?
1. How many CPU's/how fast, how much memory, how fast/what type of Hard drives?
2. What type of RAID configuration should be implemented?
3. I have to assume a VM is not the way to go?
I understand that this could be clustered, but that is more up to business, i.e. how long can live with out this data.
I think I am going to try to following the Kimball Methodology; extracting to a staging area and then do the heavy ETL from there.
Direct answers to these questions, if you can point me to articles to read, etc...will all be greatly appreciated!!!
Also, if anyone can suggest a book to buy for a Data Warehouse beginner, that would be greatly appreciated as well!!!
Thank You

Thanks SQL Buddy!!!
I've been reading up on the Kimball Methodology and actually just purchased The Data Warehouse Toolkit: The Definitive Guide to Dimensional Modeling about an hour ago.
Thanks for the suggestions!!
Would you have any insight into the Server specs for a Data Warehouse Server?
Thanks Again!!

Specs depend on your environment and workloads. Regarding RAID level, I would recommend RAID 10.
Pls check these to get a basic idea ..
