Server Service running, but no login possible !

  • Hi,

I have a SQL Server 7 running, where the server service starts, but nobody can make a connection to the server (so the agent won't start either).  I cannot use Enterprise Manager either because of same problem (cannot connect to server).

There are no errors in the event log (apart from the sqlagent not starting).

Any help/suggestions are very much appreciated.

  • Have you seen the sql error logs? Can you post it?

The files are in the install folder, within LOG folder, open them with notepad. The most recent is ERRORLOG.

  • What is the error when you try to connect?

Have you tried to connect from the server?

  • Hi,

Here's the error message I get when I try to manage the server in Enterprise Manager:

"A connection could not be established to <server>. - Login failed for user <user>.

Please verify SQL Server is running and check your SQL Server registration properties."

I can verify that SQL Server is running alright, and the security is set to mixed. The user account I am using is member of the domain admins group, so this user should have access to it.

I also tried an ODBC connection using a sql server user account, but result was the same.  Every login fails. It is as if the logins table is empty....

  • ... "The user account I am using is member of the domain admins group, so this user should have access to it." ...

that is not the case if you removed builtin\administrators !! Then you would have to give that user or that admin-user-group sysadmin privileges for sqlserver !

Try to connect using the sa sqllogin !

  • Try also a connection with osql through command prompt, just to verify that everything with EM ist OK

  • Hi,

First of all thanks for the help.  Here's what happened today: users could log in again as if nothing had happened.

Since this is a server at a remote site that we've just begun to support, it is impossible for the moment to explain how this is possible, or what has happened over there.  The remote site people thought I had fixed the problem, and I thought they had, but in fact nobody has done anything, it just started working again by itself....  This does require some further investigation, but anyway, thanks again for your support !  It is very much appreciated.

    regards,

    Koen
