Server Server missing from Start Menu

  • I have a 2003 Server which has two Named Instances of SQL Server 2000.

I need to add a third Named Instance, but when I logged onto the Server this morning, I noticed that all of the

'Microsoft SQL Server' Entries are missing from the START/PROGRAMS menu !! Enterprise Manager, BOL... everything!!  The SQL Server Service Manager is running and both of my Instances are up and running (this is a production box).  I can launch Enterprise Manager from MMC.EXE in WINDOWS\System32 folder...  very weird!!!!

In my Add/Remove Programs, I see MS SQL Server listed Twice.. one time for each of the two named Instances.

Has anyone ever seen this before???  Do you think it's safe to run SQL Server Installation to Install a Third Instance on this box???

  • Yes, it should be safe to install a third instance.  All that you've got missing are a few shortcuts.  Maybe somebody tried dragging them from the Start Menu on to the desktop, but ended up moving instead of copying them.  Or maybe whoeever installed the first two instances didn't have the right permissions to put the shortcuts into the All Users area of the start menu.  Try doing a Windows search for Enterprise Manager on the whole of your c drive.  If that doesn't find your shortcuts, look in the Recycle Bin to see whether anyone's deleted them accidentally.
