I installed sql 2008 with default instance name but whne i am trying to install SP2 on it it is not recognizing sql server. any one know why?

Is it possible you installed 2008 R2?

what is the difference between SQL 2008 Ent and SQL 2008 R2?
we purchased SQL 2008 Enterprise, is there a chance we get R2 with that?

Can i install R2 CU 4 directly without 1,2 and 3? or can i also directly start using it without cumulative upadtes?
can we directly download them from MS support site ?

Yes, you can apply CU4 and it will contain CU1, CU2, and CU3. They are Cumulative updates which means you only need to apply the latest.
You can download the CU by going to the following link and clicking on "view and request hotfix downloads".

but it says only X86 and i have 64 bit OS and SQL.

I am just wondering if 2008 R2 standard has Data compression and Backup compression. I know its not available in SQL 2008 but guessing R2 should have as it is the latest version which can be assumed as SQL 2010.

SQL 2008R2 Standard does have backup compression but not data compression.

On the download screen there is a link " Show hotfixes for all platforms and languages ". This will give you all the versions available.

No, Enterprise only. Check out the link below for the feature list of 2008R2.
