Server Losing Connectivity

  • Hi guys,

I have a question - I have looked high and low for an answer, but so far I have been unsuccessful.

I have a Web Server which hosts roughly 15 websites.  This server connects locally to our SQL 2005 box which hosts about 15 databases.  My company makes a very large web application.  This application is just one of the sites and one of databases.  The site is used throughout the day by all our developers (maximum 10 people).

    The problem:

About once or twice a day - the web application reports that the connection could not be opened. (i forget the exact error message - will post when it happens again).  The basics of it is that it fails trying to open the connection to the SQL Server.  When this happens there are a few things to note:

    a) All other websites work fine - including sql server connections

    b) The problem application is active in about 10 other locations (all used far more heavily than ours), all of which do not suffer from this problem

    c) The problem is easily fixed by repairing the network connection on the SQL box! (network connections --> right click --> repair)

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks,

    Greg

  • Upon further inspection:

On our ASP pages the error comes in as:

    Provider error '80004005'

    Unspecified error

    D:\WEBSITES\FRAMEWORK.ISAMS.CO.UK\WWW\SYSTEM\CONNECTIONS\../../customisation/connections/inc_dbconn.asp, line 3

    line 3 is :

    conn.open sConnectionString.

What i said before about the other sites remaining live is not true.  They all go down with the same error message.  Once again - repairing the connection resolves all issues.

  • Bump...

    any suggestions at all?

  • Sounds like a flaky network card. Try switching to a different NIC in the box to see if the issue remains.
