server is running low on system resources

  • Hi there i have a problem with SQL 2005 when running a report from the ad-hoc reporting server, gets to approx 84,000 lines and receives error: "server is running low on system resources" the session is then terminated. The error is being generated via the Reporting Tool. Checked the Database Server 06 and there is no obvious issues apart from the Transaction Log being full, would this be the problem?

Very new to this and unsure how to clear the transaction log

    Thanks for reading!

  • It sounds like you are facing multiple challenges here. The "low on system resources" message is probably referring to memory on the server. What all is running on the same server as the reporting services? Reporting services can be a memory hog at times.

The fact that your transaction log is full or nearly full is a separate issue, and how to resolve that will depend on your recovery mode (simple or full) and if the log file is set to autogrow or not.

  • It sounds like memory to me as well.

84k lines? How useful a report can that be. It would seem to me that it's been designed inappropriately in the first place. If you need summations, let the server do those, not the report.

  • Thanks for your replies its a client database i contacted them and they advised that they regularly run reports up to 400,000 and they are fine but the errors have just started this month

The backups are on full recovery
